Fixer Upper Fixes
Feel like your home needs a bit of a refresh but not sure where to start? Expert designer, business owner and down-to-earth mom, Joanna Gaines says, “for the interior, simple changes like new light fixtures, a new backsplash, or a fresh coat of paint can go a long way.” [1] We agree. You don’t have to make a huge investment to make a big statement when it comes to improvements around your home. And lighting can make or break the statement and mood you are trying to create.
Just imagine yourself cozied up next to a roaring fire, with a glass of wine (or your favorite post-dinner indulgence), a loved one and…florescent track lighting. Or imagine attending a hockey game with only pot-lights to see the action by. And ladies, we don’t even need to get started on department store change-room lighting, do we?
The wrong lighting for a venue or mood, can ruin your overall experience. So next time you’re thinking of making a change to your lighting, give us a call. Our experienced staff can advise you on the most appropriate lighting for your space and ensure that it is installed correctly, keeping you and your home or business safe.

Did you know LEDs save money and are environmentally friendly?
A simple way to save money on electrical bills is to install new lights. Not only is it cost efficient, and uses less energy, but they look great too. Paying for LEDs can cost more out of the box, but light-emitting diodes are more efficient, using 75% less energy and can last 20-30 years in an average home. Another tip is too put lights on a dimmer to reduce energy when full-intensity light is not needed, plus it looks better. Begin by replacing the lights used more frequently in your home and see the savings add up.

GFCI outlets
Did you know? GFCI outlets save lives and protect from electrical shock. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters monitor the amount of current flowing from hot to neutral and if there is any imbalance, it trips the circuit. It is recommended to have GFCIs installed in areas where appliances and power tools are close to water (kitchens, bath and laundry rooms, and even outside or in the garage where electric power tools might be used).
Monthly testing to ensure your GFCIs are working is simple to do. Plug in a light fixture and turn it on. Then push the device’s test button. If the light stays on, the GFCI needs to be replaced. You don’t want to be the path-to-ground for electricity causing burns, injury or death from a fatal electric shock.
Call us at Rooham Electric if you have any questions or need assistance installing or replacing GFCIs in your home.
Prevent Electrical Fires
These are photos of a recent fire that could have been prevented, don’t let it happen to you. It was caused by a slow exterior water leak. Keep yourself and your family safe.
Did you know? If your lights dim or flicker, you shouldn’t ignore this. It could be a sign of a much larger problem. All things wear down and you may be vulnerable to electrical fires especially from putting off panel upgrades, if you have an old fuse box, if breakers don’t reset, or circuits that keep tripping. If you have oversized fuses, if there is natural deterioration over time, if your home has outdated aluminum or knob and tube or even previous contractor or homeowner DIY mistakes.
If the electrical panel has smoke coming out of it or smells like burnt wiring, or worse flames are coming out of an outlet, panel, or electrical device turn off the main circuit breaker only if it safe to do so! In case of fire evacuate the premises immediately and call 911 to contact the Fire Department. Then call a certified electrician to have a thorough electrical safety inspection done.
Rooham Electric’s fully licensed and certified electricians can provide a detailed Electrical Safety Inspection to ensure all wires and components meet legal safety standards set out The Canadian Electrical Code in BC.
The benefits of a licensed contractor
- They know all the legal requirements pertaining to regulated gas and electrical work and have the training and expertise required to do the job safely
- They will obtain the required permit(s) on your behalf and make sure the work meets all code requirements
- They will manage the inspection process and repair all deficiencies
- When the time comes to sell your house, buyers, realtors and lenders may require proof that all regulated gas, boiler, and electrical work was done with permits to help ensure the house is safe for future occupants.

Daylight Savings Time means it is time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.
Did you know? New building code requires combo smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms installed in hallways and on every floor of your home including the basement. As well as, smoke detectors in all bedrooms or sleeping areas. Smoke alarms save lives.
The government of Canada states that, “being prepared is your best defence against a fire in your home” and Rooham Electric agrees. Our electrician’s tip of the day is to test all your smoke alarms (even those hardwired) every month, replace the batteries every year, and the actual device every ten years.
Some people use daylight savings time as a reminder of when to change the batteries. Here is a photo of Shawn Hamling, the owner and operator of Rooham Electric changing the batteries of his smoke detector in his home.
If you have a home built prior to hardwired smoke detectors, let us give you a free estimate to install new ones. It is not as much money as you might think.
Be safe and minimize your family’s risk of injury from the staff at Rooham Electric.

Quick & Easy Conduit Repair with EPR Conduit Repair Kits
At Rooham Electric, we stay on the forefront of technology to ensure our customers benefit from the latest and greatest, and the most efficient repairs and service.
Now, we’re offering conduit repair services using IPEX’s EPR kits. With unique interlocking joints, we are able to simply close the two half shell pieces over existing installed wire and cable. The use of standard PVC solvent cement enables the kit to be very quickly assembled and connected, repairing the conduit to its original form. Better yet, unlike traditional conduit repair strategies, EPR kits modular nature allows us to repair any length and type of pipe quickly and accurately.
If that weren’t enough, EPR kits now feature enhanced UV resistance. Being manufactured from high-impact and non-conductive PVC, these kits closely match the color of most existing conduit and fittings.
